Udaipur Files was finally released in theatres across India on August 8, 2025. The film is based on the 2022 murder case of Kanhaiya Lal Teli, which sparked controversy even before its release. Despite the real-life connection, the film did not get the audience response expected. It had limited shows and the first-day box office collection was under Rs. 25 lakhs, according to trade reports.
The audience turnout was low for several reasons. Most people were not aware the film was in theatres as there were no promotions. Also, many are unfamiliar with the details of Kanhaiya Lal Teli’s case.
The release had been delayed after objections from the victim’s family, who said the film could disturb social harmony and cause them mental agony. They even took the matter to the Rajasthan High Court.
Though the producers opposed the stay, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) required 55 cuts to reduce controversy. The Supreme Court later lifted the stay last month, ruling that making a film on a true event is not illegal. Given the extended media attention, the film should have had more shows and better collections on day one.
The makers may have assumed controversy would help the film succeed. However, many films already running in theatres are doing better. For example, Saiyaara is still getting a positive response, while some viewers prefer Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2.
Meanwhile, Hollywood films have also been doing well, with two new horror films released last Friday. Next week will see big releases like War 2 and Coolie.
Considering the current competition and theatre situation, the makers might have chosen a different release date. As things stand, Udaipur Files is expected to be largely ignored by the audience.
