Vidya Balan Still Regrets Missing This Iconic Role

Vidya Balan Rashmika M.S. Subbulakshmi

Vidya Balan has revealed that missing the chance to play legendary Carnatic singer M.S. Subbulakshmi remains a painful memory. The actress was set to star in a biopic directed by Rajiv Menon more than a decade ago, but the project was stalled by a legal dispute and never took off.

Vidya Balan shared that Subbulakshmi’s music had been part of her life since childhood, making the role especially close to her heart. She had even undergone a photoshoot as the legendary singer, and the pictures received a lot of attention.

Interestingly, the photoshoot led to seven offers for Vidya to play Subbulakshmi in films. However, she turned them down because she wanted the necessary permissions to be secured before taking up the role. Despite the opportunities, she did not want to move ahead without resolving those issues.

While Vidya’s dream of playing the singer remains unfulfilled, a new biopic is now moving forward. Rashmika Mandanna has been officially cast as M.S. Subbulakshmi, under Jersey and Kingdom fame Gowtam Tinnanuri direction.
