Among Telugu stars, Allu Arjun currently stands out as the only actor placing massive back-to-back bets on Tamil directors. First, he chose a massive project with Atlee, and now he is moving forward with Lokesh Kanagaraj. However, expectations are modest from these films as of now.
Despite Jawan becoming a massive blockbuster, a section of audiences feels that Atlee relies heavily on remix ideas from older films, with no originality. His film with Allu Arjun is a high budget sci-fi entertainer mounted on a massive scale.
After finishing Atlee’s project, Allu Arjun is expected to join Lokesh Kanagaraj’s film AA23, planned as a pan India superhero mass entertainer produced by Mythri Movie Makers. An announcement video released has further increased curiosity.
However, audience’s trust in Lokesh Kanagaraj is currently at its lowest. His recent film Coolie got thrashed for weak writing and amateurish execution. Lokesh is suddenly at an all-time low as a director, as his reputation has been badly hit after Coolie. Because of this, several Tamil heroes are hesitant to trust Lokesh, which makes Allu Arjun’s decision to back him even more surprising.
After the historic success of Pushpa 2, which crossed Rs.1800 crore worldwide, Allu Arjun’s market, especially in Hindi belts, has expanded phenomenally. Now he wants to increase his Tamil market and working with prominent Tamil directors seems to be a deliberate strategy.
At present, Allu Arjun may be the only pan-India actor with a realistic chance of making a solid impact in Tamil cinema. From Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan is no longer at a phase where he can dominate mass Tamil audiences in a big way, Prabhas lacks the agility traditionally associated with Tamil mass heroes, and Mahesh Babu failed to connect with Tamil audiences through SPYder. Even Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, despite RRR, have not fully broken through in Tamil Nadu.
Allu Arjun, on the other hand, has age on his side, exceptional dancing skills, strong screen presence, and a persona that blends Telugu and Tamil mass sensibilities. His popularity in Kerala further strengthens his position.
The real question now is whether he can truly crack the toughest Tamil market, and whether directors like Atlee and Lokesh Kanagaraj can deliver content that will make Allu Arjun the darling of Tamil masses. The gamble is big, but if it pays off, it could redefine Allu Arjun’s stardom across Tamil like no other Telugu star.
