The trailer of Coolie has sparked mixed reactions across social media. While some praised Lokesh Kanagaraj’s direction and the pairing of Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, and Aamir Khan, others felt it was underwhelming compared to the massive expectations created by the legendary combination. Many believe the trailer failed to deliver the hype fans anticipated.
However, the bigger concern lies in distribution. The Hindi version of Coolie is being handled by Pen Studios, which has a poor recent track record at the box office. In 2025 alone, the studio struggled with major releases like Sikandar, Housefull 5, Maalik, Maa, and Kannappa, all of which turned out to be big flops. This has raised doubts about whether Pen can execute a large-scale pan-India release effectively for a film of this magnitude.
Adding to the challenge, Coolie will hit theaters on August 14, the same day as War 2, a mega-budget Yash Raj Films project starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR. YRF is known for its strong distribution network and powerful marketing, which could limit Coolie to less than 30 percent of the Hindi screens.
Despite featuring top stars, the Hindi promotional campaign for Coolie appears weak. Trade analysts question why Rajinikanth is not being projected as a true pan-India star in the North and why Aamir Khan’s comeback angle is not aggressively marketed.
So far, 2025 has been lackluster at the box office, with only Chhaava crossing ₹800 crore globally to become the year’s biggest hit. Saiyaara also performed well, but no other film surpassed the ₹300 crore mark. Now, both Coolie and War 2 are expected to revive momentum.
At this stage, it is not just a clash between two star-studded action films but also a test of distribution strength, marketing strategy, and screen count. Coolie boasts strong content and a legendary cast, but without a solid release plan, it risks underperforming in the Hindi belt. The coming days will decide which film secures dominance and whether either can dethrone Chhaava as 2025’s biggest success.
