Finally, after 7 months of struggle, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay‘s final film Jana Nayagan directed by H Vinoth, was released in theatres on July 23rd and received poor reviews from audience and critics alike. No big hero film received such outright negative reviews in recent times.
Even though Jana Nayagan‘s HD print was leaked online and the movie was released after multiple postponements, it is performing decently at the box office. Especially in Tamil Nadu, the film is enjoying a dream run with a solid hold.
According to reports, as of Saturday, the film has collected around 64 crores in Tamil Nadu, despite the mixed reviews. The major reason for this solid collection in the state is that the Kollywood audience is watching the film in theatres with the intention of giving a royal send-off to actor Vijay.
At the same time, Jana Nayagan is also performing exceptionally well in Kerala. Sources suggest that the film has collected more than 10 crores in Kerala and has already emerged as a hit in the state.
In contrast, Jana Nayagan’s Telugu version, Jana Nayakudu, is heading towards a washout status and in the Telugu states, the film is struggling to sustain itself in theatres.
With all the state collections combined up to Saturday, Jana Nayagan has collected around 108 crores in India alone and 162 crores worldwide. Many trade experts suggest that Jana Nayagan will cross its 200-crore mark today; considering the release delay and leak, these box office figures are impressive.
They claim that if the film had been released as planned on January 9th, it would have easily collected more than 500 crores worldwide in its final run. However, the current trend suggests that the film will complete its theatrical run with a 300-crore collection.
Ultimately, this 4-day extended opening weekend seems to be a positive thing for Jana Nayagan, but the real test starts tomorrow. Hence, it remains to be seen how Jana Nayagan is going to perform during the weekdays and whether it collects more than 300 crores at the box office in the following days.
