Once regarded as one of the most promising mid-range stars in Telugu cinema after hits like Tholi Prema, F2, and Gaddalakonda Ganesh, Varun Tej gradually lost his box office momentum due to a series of unsuccessful experiments.

Films like Ghani, Gandeevadhari Arjuna, Operation Valentine, and Matka not only underperformed but also significantly dented his market. Now, all hopes rest on Korean Kanakaraju.

Interestingly, the film has registered the lowest theatrical business among Varun Tej’s recent solo films, closing at around Rs. 13 crore worldwide.

Here’s how his recent theatrical business compares:

Korean Kanakaraju – Rs. 13 crore

Matka – Rs. 18 crore

Operation Valentine – Rs. 18 crore

Gandeevadhari Arjuna – Rs. 17 crore

Ghani – Rs. 26 crore

Gaddalakonda Ganesh – Rs. 25 crore

Antariksham – Rs. 20 crore

Tholi Prema – Rs. 23 crore

At first glance, the steady decline reflects how much Varun Tej’s market has shrunk over the last few years. But this is arguably the safest deal of his recent career. Strong non-theatrical business through OTT and satellite rights has reportedly allowed the makers to keep the theatrical valuation realistic instead of chasing inflated collections.

The Telugu states account for around Rs. 11 crore of the business, while Karnataka, the rest of India, and overseas contribute another Rs. 2 crore, taking the worldwide theatrical business to Rs. 13 crore.

That means Korean Kanakaraju needs around Rs. 14 crore in distributor share, or roughly Rs. 28-30 crore worldwide gross, to break even and emerge as a theatrical success. Compared to the unrealistic expectations attached to Varun Tej’s previous films, this target looks more achievable.

The trailer has generated decent buzz, and director Merlapaka Gandhi is also looking for a comeback after a series of flops. If the comedy-horror entertainer clicks with audiences, trade believes Korean Kanakaraju has a good chance of becoming a success.

For Varun Tej, this is not about breaking records. It is about rebuilding trust. After four consecutive disasters, a clean commercial hit could revive his market and give him the confidence to move on to bigger projects. In that sense, Korean Kanakaraju’s low theatrical business may turn out to be its biggest strength.
