Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, has landed in serious trouble after a fresh court order. The film was initially scheduled for a Pongal release on January 9th.
The release was postponed due to censorship certificate issues, and there is still no confirmation about a new release date. Since then, the makers have been awaiting legal clarity.
Many expected the Chief Justice’s verdict today to be favourable. Industry circles believed it would clear the path for a February 6th or February 13th release. However, the outcome has taken an unexpected turn.
The Chief Justice has sent the case back to a single judge for a fresh hearing. This development makes it clear that if the Jana Nayagan team continues to fight the case legally, the film may not see a release in the near future.
Sources also suggest that Jana Nayagan includes visuals and dialogues involving foreign powers creating religious conflicts in India. This is reportedly one of the main reasons the CBFC referred the film to the Revising Committee.
Following today’s judgment, several legal and film experts on social media advised the makers to reconsider their approach. They believe withdrawing the case and accepting the CBFC’s suggested duration could lead to an earlier release.
At the same time, strong support for Jana Nayagan has emerged online. Many users feel the situation is unfair, especially since this is the final film of one of the industry’s most celebrated actors and involves massive business stakes.
Several users pointed out what they see as double standards. They noted that Akhanda 2, starring Balayya, featured similar plot elements but faced no issues from the CBFC and enjoyed a smooth theatrical release.
According to these users, this raises questions about selective scrutiny. They argue that Jana Nayagan is being restricted due to political pressure rather than its actual content.
For now, the future of Jana Nayagan remains uncertain. Much depends on how the makers handle the censorship battle in the coming days and when the film will finally secure a theatrical release.
