What Is the Show About?

While trying to fix a rift between his friend and a love interest, Sid bumps into a practical girl, Sofia, and they bond under unusual circumstances. Sofia, a geek since childhood, has developed a ‘love-meter’ that claims to confirm if a person is genuinely in love. Though she is stubborn about the accuracy of her invention, a 12-hour challenge thrown by Sid begins to alter her rigid ideas of romance.

Performances

Fresh from the success of Office, Guru Lakshman plays Siddharth with ease, cast as a clear-headed man dealing with a conflicted love interest. Humour and timing remain his key strengths. Padine Kumar makes a mark as Sofia, handling a role with an interesting emotional graph that brings her mettle to the forefront. The supporting cast, including Anith Yashpaul, Sumithra, Jeeva Ravi among others, is adequate, but they are given little room to add much value.

Analysis

Heartiley Battery is an apt title to mirror the story’s conflict between the heart and the mind. While the cool-headed boy is all-heart and makes instinctive choices, the girl builds a wall around herself owing to a bitter past and trusts logic over impulse. The show is ultimately about the protagonist freeing herself from past baggage and overcoming her apprehensions – a conundrum externalised through a love meter.

In a world increasingly monopolised by gadgets and AI, Heartiley Battery feels like a relevant, cautionary tale (though over-simplified at points) with a feel-good vibe. It puts the spotlight on the growing technological interference in human relationships and how it could potentially lead to an empty existence. ‘Don’t lose your identity at the cost of a gadget’ is what it says in a nutshell.

The love story serves as a catalyst for Sofia’s transformation. The director does well to keep the proceedings light and relatable, without reducing the narrative to a preachy ‘say no to gadgets’ commentary. Despite the crisp runtime, two and a half hours across six episodes, there is enough space to explore the character’s past and internal confusions.

The show starts on a savoury note, focusing on Sid’s liking for Sofia and exploring their daily lives before coming to the heart of the matter: the love meter and Sid’s challenge. Sofia’s device is rooted in her belief in science over emotion; she reduces love to a formula, claiming to detect a person’s true feelings through a simple finger impression.

Honestly, the love-meter is too simplistic a concept to fully buy into. The fact that a predominantly woke generation would express their blind trust in a gadget without questioning its basis is surprising. Instead of merely quoting formulas and Sofia’s love for science, a more solid backstory regarding the gadget’s creation would have brought much-needed authenticity to the storytelling.

The highlight of the show is the time Sid and Sofia spend during the 12-hour challenge. Sid doesn’t try to go overboard to impress her, preferring instead to be a good listener. Their date closing with the line, ‘I’ll always be there for you,’ is the icing on the cake. It is minimalistic and provides a healing touch to Sofia’s character, keeping things simple yet effective.

The show loses some of its bite with the subplot involving a couple on the cusp of divorce and Sofia’s subsequent guilt. Though the intent is clear – to concretise the thought that relationships are more complex than a gadget suggests – the writing here could have been sharper. While you generally know where Heartiley Battery is heading, you stroll along for its earnest execution, free of gimmicks.

Heartiley Battery is meant for easy, light-hearted viewing and tells a simple, heartfelt story. Though far from perfect, you won’t regret the watch.

Music and Other Departments?

Micheal Akash’s score, much like the show, alters from goofy to dramatic to poignant without losing momentum. The cinematography by Coolie Sounderrajan is innovative; considering the limitations of the backdrop, he lends a certain classiness to the visuals. The writing is generally peppy and mature, though it takes some convenient creative liberties. The show could have benefited from more character elaboration, especially within the subplots.
