What Is the Film About?
In Your Dreams is a vibrant, imaginative animated adventure revolving around the sibling duo, Stevie (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) and Elliot (Elias Janssen). Stevie, the older sister, is a perfectionist who sees her family fracturing as her parents, Mom (Cristin Milioti) and Dad (Simu Liu), grapple with marital struggles and the possibility of a major move. On the other hand, her little brother is a mess, but in a very fun way. He is lovable, lazy, naughty, magic-obsessed, yet a kind-hearted kid.
Believing she can fix everything and return the family to its “perfect” past, Stevie, along with her younger brother, discovers a mystical book that allows them to enter and share their dreamscape. The two embark on a surreal quest through this wildly imaginative world, consisting of a landscape populated by zombie breakfast foods, an evil Nightmara, and a wisecracking stuffed giraffe, to find the legendary Sandman (Omid Djalili). Their ultimate wish: for the Sandman to magically grant them the perfect, happy family.
Performances
The movie features a fantastic and well-balanced voice cast. Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Stevie and Elias Janssen as Elliot do great work as the central brother-sister duo. The former perfectly captures Stevie’s anxiety and burdened sense of responsibility, while Janssen nails Elliot’s messy, yet endearing chaos. Their voices steer the emotional core of the film, the sibling bond, which is the true soul of the movie.
Craig Robinson as Baloney Tony completely steals the show as Elliot’s beloved, snarky, stuffed giraffe. He offers a generous amount of laughter, serving as the funny, sometimes cowardly character, but in the end, Baloney finds the much-needed bravery to save the siblings.
The rest of the cast is in fine form. Simu Liu (Dad) and Cristin Milioti (Mom), despite having less screen time in the adventure, inject a necessary sense of realism and emotional weight into the film’s waking-world moments. Omid Djalili (Sandman) and Gia Carides (Nightmara) are commendable in their respective fantastical roles.
Analysis
Director Alex Woo (who has a background as a storyboard artist on major Pixar titles, such as Ratatouille, WALL-E, Cars 2, The Good Dinosaur, Finding Dory, and more) has successfully crafted a family film that openly takes a page out of the Pixar playbook, particularly drawing comparisons to Inside Out, due to its concept of exploring an internal landscape.
However, In Your Dreams has a big heart and a message of its own. It tackles the very real, messy, and often painful anxieties children face when their family feels like it is on the verge of fracturing. The film executes its storyline in the best possible way, culminating not in a magical, perfect fix, but in a nuanced understanding that reality is complex.
The ultimate insight is that it’s not what Stevie sees that has changed, but her deeper acceptance of reality and the people around her, that a messy, imperfect family that sticks together is better than a false portrayal of perfection.
The internal landscape isn’t just a fun setting. Instead, it’s a reflection of Stevie’s turmoil and fear of loss. This choice elevates the film from a typical animated adventure to a meaningful exploration of childhood trauma and resilience. This powerful emotional core is the film’s undeniable strength, injecting its fantastical journey with genuine stakes and heartbreak that will surely resonate with you. The film is a successful blend of comedy, emotional depth, and fantastical adventure.
Beyond the story and themes, In Your Dreams is a technical triumph, highlighted by its stunning visuals and excellent voice acting. The vibrant dream world is a feast for the eyes, utilising a dynamic colour palette and imaginative creature designs that maximise the potential of the internal setting.
The resulting film benefits from a polished structural understanding of how to blend high-concept fantasy with deeply personal, relatable emotion, making In Your Dreams immediately accessible and engaging to a wide family audience.
The emotional payoff in the end is earned through the perilous journey in the dream world, demonstrating that the adventure was less about fixing a problem and more about achieving a necessary, deeper acceptance of reality and the people around Stevie.
Overall, In Your Dreams is a vibrant and heartfelt animated family film about siblings journeying through a dream world to fix their family. The movie features stunning visuals, excellent voice acting, and a strong emotional core that tackles themes of perfection versus messy reality. It’s a highly recommended, visually dazzling, and moving family entertainer, despite its familiar Pixar-like structure.
Music and Other Departments?
In Your Dreams also shines in terms of music and other departments. The animation, done by Sony Pictures Imageworks, is absolutely stunning and matches the heights of Pixar.
The visuals are bright, innovative, lively, and colourful, featuring smooth animation with some standout anime-style visuals. The visual artists clearly had a blast creating the dreamworld, with surreal imagery like Breakfast Town and the nightmarish settings, demonstrating tons of creativity, especially in the siblings’ shared dream sequences.
The soundtrack is cheery and engaging, and incorporates parent-friendly nostalgia alongside fun dream-world tracks. The music helps carry the film, cutting through some of the slower, more sentimental moments.
