Indian Students Pump $8B in US: Nothing in Return? Indian students are pouring over $8 billion into the US economy every year as revealed by the US and Indian leaders in a joint statement. However, as the environment gets more uncertain for immigrants, what does the future hold for the Indian youth in America? After their meeting PM Modi and Donald Trump announced that more than 300,000 Indian students pay sky-high tuition fees in the US. While they praise this massive contribution, the students continue to face endless visa struggles and job uncertainties. Trump had a rather favorable tone for a change in front of his Indian counterpart. They talked about “legal mobility” and the “global workplace” making sure the transfer of individuals leads to stronger relations between the countries. However, the current environment in the US seems to be more hateful towards Indians. The US President has already started imposing strict visa rules for immigrants that will curb this influx of Indian students and workers. These are not only limited to govt actions but racist attacks and incidents of hate speech against the Indian diaspora are also increasing in the society. All of this is a direct antithesis of what both leaders suggested in their statement. India and the US love to call each other strategic partners but will it be of any benefit to the Indian people? If this trend continues, Indian students will continue to flow cash into the US economy while getting little in return.
