MLAs Defection Case: SC Gives Final Deadline

MLAs defection case Supreme Court hearing

The Supreme Court has heard a petition challenging the decision taken by Telangana Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar on the MLAs defection issue. The matter was taken up by a two-member Bench. The case has once again drawn political attention.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed the Speaker to decide the issue within a fixed time frame. During the latest hearing, Telangana government counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi informed the Court that an inquiry was currently underway. He sought three weeks’ time to conclude the process.

After hearing both sides, the Bench ordered that the next hearing will be held after three weeks. The Court made it clear that the Speaker must complete the process within this period. Failure to do so would be treated as contempt of Court.

So far, Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar has completed inquiries into eight MLAs accused of defection. Their disqualification petitions were dismissed. However, inquiries involving Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari are still pending.

Meanwhile, BRS has maintained that defections did take place. The party has demanded by-polls for all ten MLAs involved. Political analysts say the prolonged proceedings have turned the issue into a daily political drama.
