On What Grounds Are You Opposing PK’s Photo?

Pawan Kalyan photo display case

A controversy erupted over the display of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s photograph in government offices. Objections were raised, and a petition was even filed in the Supreme Court challenging the move. However, the court dismissed the plea.

The petition was filed by a retired railway employee from Vijayawada, A.M. Kondala Rao. He argued that the Deputy Chief Minister’s post does not carry constitutional status and questioned the decision to display Pawan Kalyan’s photograph in all government offices and secretariats across the state. The petitioner claimed this amounted to misuse of public funds and cited earlier Supreme Court observations that public money should not be used for political projection.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant, Justice N.V. Anjaria and Justice Joymalya Bagchi rejected the arguments. The court questioned the petitioner, asking, “If the Deputy Chief Minister’s photo is displayed in government offices, what is your problem?” The bench observed that there was no substantial issue in the matter and dismissed the petition.

Earlier, the petitioner had approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court with a similar plea. The High Court had also dismissed it, questioning where any prohibition existed on displaying the Deputy CM’s photo and remarking that the PIL appeared politically motivated. It advised that PILs should serve a larger public interest.

After the High Court rejection, the petitioner moved the Supreme Court, but the top court too declined to intervene, effectively closing the matter.
