The Government of India has officially issued a gazette notification declaring Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh. The notification clearly states that this decision is treated as coming into effect from June 2, 2024.
That one line is very important.
June 2, 2024 is not a random date. It marks the end of the 10-year period after the 2014 bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. As per the law, Hyderabad was allowed to serve as a joint capital for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh only for those 10 years. Once that period ended, Hyderabad became exclusive to Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh had to fully move to its own capital.
By fixing June 2, 2024 as the effective date, the government is aligning Amaravati with that legal deadline. It clearly shows that from the moment Hyderabad stopped being an option, Amaravati is the only capital of Andhra Pradesh.
This also puts an end to the uncertainty created in the previous Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s rule, when the idea of three capitals was proposed and Amaravati’s development was stalled. By using this date, the government is drawing a clear line. Everything before it belongs to that phase of confusion. Everything after it is officially under Amaravati.
There is also a practical benefit. Any decisions taken after June 2, 2024, whether it is construction work, administrative setup, or funding, now have a solid legal base. There is no ambiguity about when Amaravati became the capital in full sense.
In simple terms, June 2, 2024 works as a clean starting point. It matches the law, removes confusion, and firmly establishes Amaravati as the only capital going forward.
It also makes it almost impossible to remove Amaravati as the capital of AP for YS Jagan in future. The legal system now provides full cover for Amaravati, with the capital city areas clearly notified under the provisions of the APCRDA Act, 2014. This is also clearly mentioned in the Government of India gazette notification.
This also shows how a veteran like Chandrababu Naidu has put an end to YS Jagan’s game with the state in the name of three capitals, and finally brings clarity on the capital issue for crores of people in Andhra Pradesh.
