A courtroom in Delhi’s Dwarka turned into a scene of intimidation and abuse on April 2 when a convict in a six-year-old cheque bounce case threatened and harassed the presiding judge, Shivangi Mangla, after being found guilty.
According to the judge’s order, the convict launched into a verbal tirade moments after the verdict was pronounced. “Tu hai kya cheez… tu bahar mil, dekhte hai kaise zinda ghar jaati hai (Who are you even? Meet me outside, let’s see if you make it home alive),” he said openly in court. The accused, along with his counsel, allegedly demanded that the judge resign and threatened to file complaints if their demands were not met.

Judge Mangla stated that both the accused and his lawyer Atul Kumar mentally and physically harassed her to overturn the conviction. She reported that they pressured her to acquit the accused and even threatened to “forcibly arrange” her resignation from service.
In response, the judge has referred the matter to the District and Sessions Judge for escalation to the Delhi High Court and has called for the National Commission for Women to take appropriate action. She also issued a showcause notice to advocate Atul Kumar, questioning why criminal contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him.

On April 5, the convict was sentenced to 22 months in jail and fined Rs 6.65 lakh. The case has raised serious questions about courtroom safety and the growing threats faced by members of the judiciary while performing their duties.
