India Leads Shocking New Trend

A growing number of Indian couples are choosing sleep over their spouse by adopting “sleep divorce”. That is sleeping separately to improve rest. According to ResMed’s 2025 Global Sleep Survey, 78% of Indian couples have embraced this trend, the highest among surveyed countries. China follows with 67%, and South Korea with 65%.

Experts say modern-day stress and hectic lifestyles are key reasons behind this shift. Long work hours, financial worries, and digital distractions make it difficult to get quality sleep. Common disturbances like snoring, restlessness, and mismatched sleep schedules push couples to sleep in separate rooms.

While this arrangement improves sleep quality, some experts warn it may weaken emotional bonds. Sharing a bed releases oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which reduces stress and strengthens relationships. Studies also show that couples who sleep together experience better REM sleep, essential for mental well-being.

Stress is one of the biggest culprits behind poor sleep. In India, 69% of people report stress affecting their rest, yet many do not seek help. Women, in particular, struggle more than men due to hormonal changes and menopause.

Although sleep divorce is gaining popularity, experts suggest that instead of sleeping apart, couples should focus on reducing stress and maintaining a better work-life balance.
