The political climate in Telangana flared up intensely on Sunday as a major controversy erupted over interstate river water sharing.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader T. Harish Rao held a high-profile press conference at Telangana Bhavan, launching a direct attack on the ruling Congress government over the proposed Godavari-Cauvery river interlinking project.
Rao accused Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy of a historic betrayal, claiming the government is quietly cooperating with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The controversy stems from a revised project alignment that reportedly pulls water directly from Polavaram through Nallamala Sagar to the Cauvery basin, completely bypassing Telangana.
According to the BRS, this specific diversion route will cost Telangana up to 211 TMCft of water. It directly threatens critical local projects like the Sammakka Sagar, Wardha, and Yellampalli expansions. Rao emphasized that the previous BRS government had firmly demanded the water be drawn from sites within Telangana, such as Ichampally, to secure the state’s rightful 50% share.
With the issue dominating the headlines, the opposition is now demanding an immediate emergency session of the Telangana Legislative Assembly to pass a protective resolution. They are also calling for an all-party political delegation to travel to New Delhi and formally register the state’s fierce opposition to the current alignment before the Union Government.
