Though OTT is grasping a big share of the market, theaters are still holding onto their past glory. The experience inside a cinema hall is still one of the best ones, but accessibility comes as a big question.
The fact is, visiting a theater is expensive.
Even if you eliminate the cost of popcorn and other munching snacks, the prices come out really high. During the release of “Jailer,” just in Bangalore, PVR ticket prices went as high as ₹800 just for the normal seats. And the comfy recliners? Their tag was ₹1400.
And this isn’t exclusive to “Jailer” as the ticket pricing monopoly is eating the industry up, while the majority of people just wait for the film to come to the OTT platforms.
But this is about to change really soon.
PVR and INOX previously introduced the Passbook plan for regular moviegoers, as they will be able to watch up to ten movies for the cost of ₹699. But again, there is a twist, as the offer is only available for weekdays. And after experimentation, this is coming to South India.
Hyderabad is the first city where this will be introduced in the PVR and INOX theaters. Previously, South India was excluded from the plan as the fans from the south showcased their rage through social media.
This will bring more people to the theaters, that’s for sure, but keeping it a weekday exclusive raises some eyebrows. But again, it will also be a really profitable model for PVR, as rarely someone will exceed the 10 movie limit; realistically, very few will cross the halfway mark.
