In a symbolic display of the enduring friendship between India and France, a 241-member tri-service Indian armed forces contingent led by a military band participated in the Bastille Day Parade in Paris. The event marked the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership, showcasing the deepening ties between the two nations.
The Indian Army contingent, led by the Punjab Regiment and complemented by the Rajputana Rifles Regiment, marched with pride to the patriotic tune of ‘Sare Jahan Se Accha.’ Adding to the spectacle, a squadron of Indian Air Force (IAF) Rafale fighters, from the 101 Squadron based in Hashimara, participated in a mesmerizing flypast over the Champs-Elysees.
Bastille Day, celebrated on July 14th, commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison during the French Revolution in 1789, symbolizing democratic values of ‘Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity.’ The central theme resonates with both the Indian and French constitutions.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who visited India in September for the G20 Summit, reciprocated the warm relations. During a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 10th, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to elevate India-France relations to new heights. PM Modi expressed optimism, stating, “We discussed a series of topics and look forward to ensuring India-France relations scale new heights of progress.”
The leaders underlined their dedication to strengthening defense cooperation, emphasizing partnership in design and production expansion within India. They called for the early finalization of the Defense Industrial Roadmap, showcasing a shared commitment to enhancing security ties.
President Macron’s upcoming presence as the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations in 2024 reflects the significance of this partnership. Notably, this will be the sixth occasion where a French leader graces the Republic Day celebrations, underscoring the enduring nature of the India-France relationship.
India and France’s collaboration extends beyond defense to sectors such as space, civil nuclear, trade, investment, education, culture, and people-to-people ties. The two leaders previously met in July during PM Modi’s visit to France to attend the Bastille Day Parade, where Modi participated as the Guest of Honour, marking the 25th anniversary of the strategic partnership.
As both nations gear up for the Republic Day celebrations, the presence of President Macron signifies the continuing strength and depth of the India-France Strategic Partnership, promising a future marked by mutual cooperation and shared values.
