Dating apps were created to make meeting people easier. But they have also become risky spaces where anonymity, quick trust, and money can collide. Many users forget that every profile belongs to a real person who may hide real dangers.
The Kolkata case of chartered accountant Adarsh Losalka shows how online vulnerability can be misused. Police say Losalka met Komal Saha on a dating app. She allegedly offered paid sex and checked into a Kolkata hotel with him while her live in partner, Dhruba Mitra, waited nearby.
Inside the room, the couple allegedly tried to extort ₹20,000 from him. This was far higher than the amount agreed on the platform. When Losalka reportedly refused to pay or share his PIN, the situation turned violent.
Investigators allege that the duo assaulted him and tied his legs with a towel. They then smothered him and left with a small amount of cash from his wallet. Police are treating the case as a planned extortion that escalated into murder.
This incident is not unique. Police in many parts of India have been tracking honey trap and dating app gangs that lure men with sexual offers and then rob or blackmail them. The Losalka case highlights the need for stronger action against online sex for money rackets.
It also shows how important it is for users to stay alert. A few taps on a phone can expose finances, reputation, and personal safety. Awareness is now as important as law enforcement in preventing such crimes.
