India is witnessing a sharp rise in suicides among men, and the reasons behind it reflect a deep social crisis. The latest NCRB 2023 report shows how marriage-related stress has turned into a major factor in these deaths.
The report states that 4,836 men died by suicide due to marriage-related issues, surpassing the 4,180 women who died for the same reason. It also notes that men now account for 72.8% of the total 171,418 suicides linked to relationship or family pressure.
Behind these numbers are real lives and stories that often go unnoticed in primetime debates or social media discussions. Many cases involve financial stress, dowry demands, legal threats, emotional pressure, and broken relationships.
In Bengaluru, a 28-year-old engineer died weeks before his wedding after his fiancée’s family demanded more money and a luxury car. In Delhi, a businessman consumed poison after his wife filed a harassment complaint, which he claimed was false, during a custody conflict.
From Pune, a 26-year-old man died after his partner left with his savings and threatened legal action if he protested. These incidents reflect a worrying trend where relationships and laws sometimes turn into tools of pressure or control.
Men often carry expectations of stability, income, and emotional strength from a young age. Many face unemployment, low salaries, and rising living costs. This pressure builds silently, especially for those from middle and lower economic backgrounds.
Indian culture places men as primary earners and women as homemakers. This traditional structure creates imbalance and conflict instead of cooperation. As expectations grow higher, conversations between genders often fail to resolve real issues.
NGOs and activists call for changes in economic policies, employment support, and access to mental health care. They say every person deserves financial independence, safety, and dignity, regardless of gender.
Another major concern is the misuse of laws and the use of legal threats as manipulation. This practice needs strong action to protect individuals from injustice and emotional harm.
The NCRB 2023 data is a reminder that men facing relationship pressure or legal harassment often find little support or understanding. When help is unavailable, the outcome becomes tragic, and society loses lives that could have been saved.
