Mumbai woman duped of ₹65,000 in Keanu Reeves Instagram scam. In today’s digital world, fraudsters often misuse the names of celebrities to cheat unsuspecting people and take advantage of the trust attached to their reputation.
Celebrities are dragged into scams not because they are involved but because their names carry weight. When admiration and emotions blend with online chats, it becomes hard for people to see the difference between reality and pretence.
In one such case, a 69-year-old woman from Versova was cheated by a man impersonating Hollywood star Keanu Reeves, known worldwide as the “John Wick” actor. The scam started on Instagram and soon shifted to WhatsApp and Telegram.
The fraudster convinced her that Reeves was planning to visit India. Claiming he needed Indian currency for travel, he persuaded her to transfer ₹65,000 from her Canara Bank account to an IDBI account that belonged to someone in Dehradun.
The truth came out when her daughter in London noticed the suspicious transfer and reported it. An FIR was registered at Versova police station under IPC and IT Act, exposing the fraudulent scheme.
Importantly, Keanu Reeves has no link with the scam. The impersonator alone carried out the fraud. This case highlights how blind trust in online conversations, especially those involving celebrities, can lead to costly mistakes.
