Pahalgam Attack Disturbing AI Trend Goes Viral

The terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, can easily be called the deadliest since Pulwama, leaving 28 people dead, including two foreigners. As the country grieves from the horror, something disturbing started happening online.

People began posting AI-generated images of the tragedy, some even stooping low enough to produce Ghibli-style images of the attack, turning the terror into a joke that quickly became a trend — one that is already annoying at this point. These AI-generated versions of real-life tragedy blatantly showcase blood, gunshots, and chaos, washed over with soft pastels.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy, quickly claimed responsibility. Survivors spoke of tourists being shot at point-blank range. Meanwhile, parts of the internet seemed more focused on aestheticizing the violence than mourning it. The other half of this story is far more malicious than one may realize. People are using these images to invoke public reactions and polarize opinions online toward Islamic communities.

While Twitter users called out the “ghiblification” as tone-deaf, disgusting, and disrespectful to the victims, the use of hyperrealistic images is being circulated with malicious intent. Many of these are simply for garnering attention online and must be taken down.

While security forces track down the militants and politicians promise justice, the online world faces a different kind of rot — the use of AI to create inaccurate, polarizing depictions of the massacre aimed at serving the malicious intent of the fear mongers amidst the Indian population. Even without the shady intent, this is no joke and should be highly criticised.
