On August 13, 2025, journalist and animal activist Priyanka Gupta shocked the media fraternity by resigning from Republic TV in a dramatic fashion. In a viral video, Priyanka was seen shredding and spitting on her press ID on camera, openly accusing the channel of running propaganda and sensationalism instead of truthful journalism.
She alleged that Republic TV’s management suppressed her animal activism and pressured her to push false narratives solely for TRPs. Her resignation has sparked a massive online debate about the collapsing standards of journalism in India.
Priyanka’s case is not an isolated one. In recent years, several high-profile journalists have resigned or been forced out from leading Indian news networks for refusing to toe the line of political propaganda. Ravish Kumar’s exit from NDTV after the Adani takeover remains one of the most striking examples. Others such as Abhisar Sharma, Punya Prasun Bajpai, Shubhankar Mishra, Arfa Khanum Sherwani, and Karan Thapar have also left mainstream media, often citing censorship, editorial bias, and political pressure.
Most of these journalists now continue their work on digital platforms like YouTube and independent media outlets, far away from the restrictions of TV newsrooms. Their departure marks a clear shift in the industry, as traditional media is increasingly seen as a mouthpiece for political parties and corporate interests.
Social media users argue that primetime debates have turned into shouting matches, resembling “circuses” where moderators chase sensationalism over substance. Issues like unemployment, inflation, education, and infrastructure have been sidelined in favor of divisive, religion-based propaganda that guarantees higher TRPs.
Senior journalists warn that if this trend continues, younger generations relying only on television may never be exposed to real issues that affect their daily lives.
Priyanka Gupta’s bold resignation has become a rallying point for those who want to restore credibility in journalism. Her public stand has inspired many to demand that media houses return to ethical reporting and prioritize the concerns of ordinary citizens over political and corporate agendas.
