Today, the Madurai sessions court passed a sensational verdict for the nine police officers involved in the horrific Sathankulam custodial death case by sentencing them to the death penalty.
The Sathankulam custodial death was a tragic incident that occurred in 2020 during the lockdown. A father, Jayaraj and his son, Benicks, were arrested by police officials who claimed they kept their mobile shop open past the permitted time; they were later ruthlessly assaulted by the police in custody.
Later, through a CBI inquiry, the crimes of the police officials came to light, revealing that the accusations against the father and son were false. Ten police officials including an inspector, two sub-inspectors and several constables involved in the crime were arrested.
After multiple court hearings and examinations, Judge G Muthukumaran has passed a historic judgment of a death sentence for nine police officials: Inspector S. Sridhar, Sub-inspectors K. Balakrishnan and P. Raghu Ganesh, Head Constables S. Murugan and A. Samadurai, and four Constables: M. Muthuraja, S. Chelladurai, X. Thomas Francis, and S. Vailamuthu.
Many people are highly welcoming of this judgment, claiming it makes everyone feel that justice still prevails in this country. Additionally, many suggest that this verdict will instill fear in those who abuse their authority and will put an end to such horrific crimes.
Ultimately, many public authorities and politicians are praising this judgment and social media is flooded with comments from the people of Tamil Nadu stating that justice has finally prevailed through the Madurai sessions court.
