In Maharashtra’s Nashik district, the worsening water crisis has forced women to risk their lives daily just to access drinking water. A video from Borichivari village in Taluka Peth went viral recently, showing a woman descending into a deep, narrow well with just a rope for support, while others stood above with clay pots waiting for their turn.
With no water source in the village, women must walk nearly 2 kilometers every day under the blazing sun to reach the well. Often, they fall ill or get injured while carrying water. “We have no other option,” said a local woman. “There is no water in the village, and some even have to pay Rs 60 just to get a pot of water if they can’t go themselves.”

The crisis has not only strained health and safety but also added financial pressure to already struggling households. The Deputy Sarpanch confirmed that people are now relying on outside help or paying others to fetch water, as the situation becomes increasingly desperate.
Surprisingly, despite such grave issues, a significant section of Maharashtra’s population, especially in urban and political circles, remains preoccupied with language-related debates. Heated discussions over the status of Marathi, imposition of Hindi, and linguistic pride often overshadow basic issues like drinking water, healthcare, and sanitation.

While preserving language and culture is important, critics argue that it shouldn’t come at the cost of addressing real and immediate problems faced by ordinary people.
Residents are now demanding immediate government intervention. Eminities such as regular water tankers and a permanent, sustainable water supply are necessary to ensure that survival doesn’t have to depend on climbing into a well with a rope.
