“End of an Era”: Russell Retires but Still Loyal to KKR

Andre Russell KKR farewell moment

Andre Russell has closed a chapter in the Indian Premier League. On November 30, 2025, the KKR superstar announced his retirement from the league, ending a run that made him one of the most feared all rounders in T20 cricket.

The 37 year old will now join Kolkata Knight Riders’ support staff as their “Power Coach” for the 2026 season.

Russell played 140 IPL matches, scored 2,651 runs at a strike rate of 174.18 and took 123 wickets.

He first played for Delhi Daredevils in 2012, but his identity became fully tied with KKR from 2014 onwards. His move follows the path of Kieron Pollard, who also transitioned into coaching while still playing in global leagues.

Russell said he had long discussions with Venky Mysore and Shah Rukh Khan before making the decision. He said the franchise always gave him respect and staying in a familiar environment mattered.

What pushed him further was seeing himself photoshopped in other teams colours on social media. For him, the idea of playing for any team other than KKR never felt right and that clarity helped him decide.

His new role will allow him to guide players on power hitting, game intensity and preparation. With the T20 format evolving so quickly, having specialists like Russell in coaching roles gives franchises a big advantage.

It also reflects a trend where long term pillars of a team move into leadership roles to shape the future squads.

Russell’s loyalty is one of the most defining parts of his story. He stayed with KKR till the very end of his IPL career, never switched sides even when he was released. Never joined any other IPL team. That commitment, along with the impact he created on the field, is what makes him one of the greatest of all time in the IPL.
