India head coach Gautam Gambhir has backed Rishabh Pant ahead of the first Test against Afghanistan, but also said that players must understand and respect match situations in international cricket.
Rishabh Pant has come under pressure after a poor IPL season and a disappointing Test series against South Africa. He was also removed as India’s vice captain, with KL Rahul taking over the role.
Speaking before the Afghanistan Test, Gambhir said that a player’s main job is to perform for India. He added that captaincy and vice captaincy are not the most important things and should not be the focus of any player.
Gambhir also spoke about Pant’s batting style. The wicketkeeper batter is known for playing attacking cricket, but that approach has sometimes led to unnecessary dismissals.
The India coach said he does not want Pant to change the way he plays. despite, he added that players must understand the situation of the game and play accordingly. According to Gambhir, the main goal is to score runs and help the team.
At the same time, Gambhir confirmed that Sai Sudharsan will bat at No. 3 against Afghanistan.
There have been calls for Devdutt Padikkal to get a chance in the playing XI, but Gambhir said Sudharsan deserves more opportunities.
He pointed out that the left hander has played only a few Test matches and started his career in tough conditions in England.
Gambhir said Sudharsan has not received a fair run at No. 3 and should be given more time to prove himself. He also mentioned the batter’s good performances in recent months.
The India coach was also positive about the team’s chances in the World Test Championship. India are currently sixth in the standings after some disappointing results.
Despite that, Gambhir said the team still believes it can reach the World Test Championship final. He said the squad has enough quality and talent to turn things around.
India will take on Afghanistan in the one-off Test in Chandigarh from June 6, with several players looking to make an impact.
