Having A Baby Doesn’t End Careers: ICC’s New Rules

ICC maternity policy for women cricketers

The ICC has taken a major step to support women cricketers by introducing new guidelines for players returning to cricket after pregnancy. The move is aimed at helping players continue their careers while balancing the responsibilities of motherhood.

Under the new policy, players will follow a structured 16-week return programme that focuses on recovery, fitness, health checks and overall wellbeing. The process has been divided into six stages to ensure players return to competitive cricket in a safe and gradual manner.

The guidelines also recommend that every returning player should have access to a dedicated medical professional. This can include a doctor or physiotherapist who will oversee the recovery process and provide support whenever needed.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the organisation wants to create an environment where women do not have to choose between having a family and playing international cricket. He added that supporting players during this stage of life is important for the future growth of women’s cricket.

The policy also encourages member boards to provide practical support for players. This includes flexible training schedules, childcare assistance and suitable facilities at venues to help women return to the game with confidence.
