In the 24th match of IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium, Punjab Kings continued their dominant run by defeating Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets in a one sided contest.
Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to bowl first, and that decision set the tone for the entire match.
Mumbai, playing without Rohit Sharma, found themselves under pressure early. While the start was decent, Quinton de Kock turned the game around with a brilliant innings.
Making a return at the top, he played one of the best knocks of the season, remaining unbeaten on 112 off 60 balls.
He found good support from Naman Dhir, who scored a well made 50, and together they brought Mumbai back into the game with a strong partnership.
At one stage, Mumbai looked set to cross 210 or even push towards 220, but the familiar problem returned.
The middle order collapsed under pressure. Hardik Pandya could not accelerate, and the rest of the batting failed to contribute.
What could have been a match winning total ended at 195, which always felt slightly below par on a surface like Wankhede.
Punjab’s chase was fearless from the beginning. Even after losing an early wicket, the intent never dropped.
Prabhsimran Singh completely took control of the game with an attacking unbeaten 80, playing with confidence and freedom.
At the other end, Shreyas Iyer, often referred to as “Sarpanch,” played a captain’s knock, scoring a fluent 66 off just 35 balls. The two built a match winning partnership and did not allow Mumbai to come back at any stage. Even bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah were taken on, as Punjab chased down the target in just 16.3 overs.
This result means Punjab Kings now have four wins in five matches and remain unbeaten in completed games, with one match washed out earlier.
It has been a perfect start to the season, and with this win, they have moved to the top of the points table.
Everything seems to be clicking for them, from batting intent to execution under pressure, and even moments in the field, including a stunning catch that stood out in the match.
For Mumbai Indians the concerns are only increasing. They have now lost four of their five matches, with their only win coming in the opening game.
At Wankhede, it feels like the same old story. The team managed 195 on the board, but once again there was no clear plan with the ball.
The bowlers looked short of ideas as Punjab attacked from the start. There was no control in the powerplay, no effective use of variations at the death, and no spinner who could break partnerships.
More than anything, the team looks confused. The execution is poor, the bowling lacks discipline, and the overall approach raises serious questions.
In T20 game, scores around 200 are no longer safe, and if the bowling unit continues like this, even bigger totals may not be enough.
Mumbai Indians are clearly struggling to find answers, and unless things change quickly, their campaign in IPL 2026 could slip further away.
