Mohammed Shami has not played for India for over a year. His last appearance came in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand on March 9, 2025. Despite this gap, retirement is not on his mind.
The fast bowler has remained active in domestic cricket. He played for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He picked up 67 wickets in the 2025 to 26 season.
Even after consistent performances, Mohammed Shami has not been selected for the Indian team. The exact reasons are not clear. Reports hint at communication gaps with selectors, including BCCI chairman Ajit Agarkar.
At 35, Shami addressed retirement rumours during The Shubhankar Mishra Show. He made it clear that he is still motivated. He said he will only retire when he feels bored or loses interest in the game.
Shami will now focus on IPL 2026. He is set to play for Lucknow Super Giants after moving from Sunrisers Hyderabad. The upcoming season is important for his comeback hopes.
In IPL 2025, Shami had a difficult run. He managed only six wickets in nine matches. This was a dip compared to his Purple Cap winning performance in 2023.
Shami said he wants to focus on his rhythm and effort. He believes performance is in his control, not luck. His aim is to deliver his best on the field.
For now, Mohammed Shami’s priority is IPL 2026. A return to the Indian team remains uncertain. However, he is determined to stay ready and continue enjoying cricket.
