SKY or Shreyas? Fans Divided Over IND T20 Captaincy

Surya Kumar Yadav Shreyas Iyer Captaincy

Shreyas Iyer has consistently proven his value in both franchise cricket and for the national side. He stands as a strong example of how effective leadership can transform an average team into a competitive unit with real chances of success.

Punjab Kings struggled for nearly ten years to even reach the playoffs. However, Iyer changed that quickly in his first season as captain in 2025, leading the team to the playoffs and eventually the final against RCB in Ahmedabad.

This pattern has been visible throughout his career. Iyer has shown the ability to bring out the best in his squad, regardless of how strong or weak it may appear on paper.

Delhi Capitals had failed to reach the playoffs for eight years before Iyer took charge. Under his leadership, they qualified in 2019 and went on to reach the final against Mumbai the following year.

His captaincy stint with KKR further highlights his leadership qualities. Iyer led the Knight Riders with clarity and smart planning, helping them secure their third title and bringing joy to Kolkata.

Despite such a strong record, many are surprised that Iyer has not become a regular part of India’s T20I setup. His leadership credentials continue to raise questions about his absence.

If the BCCI is willing to experiment with players like Shubman Gill, there is a strong argument to include Iyer. Giving him an opportunity could also prepare India for leadership changes in a post-SKY era.
