Shreyas Iyer began his IPL 2026 campaign on a winning note as captain of Punjab Kings. However, the victory came with a setback. The skipper was fined after the match, despite his team securing an important win.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India imposed a fine of Rs 12 lakh on Shreyas Iyer. This came after Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh in a closely fought contest.
The match turned out to be a tight affair till the end. Punjab Kings chased the target successfully with three wickets in hand and five balls remaining, showing composure under pressure.
Debutant Cooper Connolly played a crucial role in the victory. He scored an unbeaten 72 and stabilised the innings after a sudden middle order collapse, guiding the team to a memorable win.
Shreyas Iyer, playing his first T20 since the IPL 2025 final, scored 18 runs. His contribution with the bat was limited, but his leadership helped the team stay on track during tense moments.
The fine was not related to batting or bowling performance. It was imposed due to a slow over rate during the match, which is taken seriously under IPL regulations.
Punjab Kings failed to complete their overs within the stipulated time. As a result, action was taken under the IPL code of conduct, leading to a financial penalty for the captain.
Since this was the team’s first offence of the season, the punishment was limited to a Rs 12 lakh fine. Repeat offences could attract stricter consequences depending on the severity.
The rules for slow over rates have evolved in recent years. Earlier, repeated violations could lead to captain suspensions, making it a major concern for teams.
Now, the system follows a demerit points model similar to ICC rules. While fines remain, suspensions are not imposed as quickly as before, offering some flexibility to teams.
In previous seasons, players like Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya faced suspensions due to repeated over rate offences. The updated rules now focus more on monetary penalties.
Despite the win, this match served as an early warning for Shreyas Iyer and Punjab Kings. Maintaining over rates will be crucial as the IPL 2026 season progresses.
