South Africa coach Shukri Conrad has responded calmly to the noise around the “cupcake” advertisement. The promo questioned South Africa’s record in major tournaments. It was aired before their Super 8 clash against the India national cricket team.
The advertisement suggested that South Africa celebrate small moments instead of winning trophies. Many fans felt the tone was mocking. Soon after, South Africa defeated India at the Narendra Modi Stadium, and the promo was taken down.
Shukri Conrad chose not to escalate the issue. He said the team actually enjoyed the comment. According to him, it showed that the dressing room remains unaffected by outside criticism.
South Africa are unbeaten in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup so far. They have played disciplined cricket and handled pressure well. However, the semi final against the New Zealand national cricket team at Eden Gardens will test them differently.
There has also been discussion about Ahmedabad feeling like a home ground due to recent victories. But a couple of wins do not guarantee comfort. Conditions in knockout matches can shift quickly.
Confidence is important at this stage of the tournament. Yet overconfidence can prove costly. New Zealand are known for staying composed in high pressure games and focusing on key moments.
South Africa carry strong momentum into the semi final. What they need now is control and balance. In knockout matches, reputation alone means little. Execution on the day decides the outcome.
