Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and his wife Dona Ganguly have received death threats, with Kolkata Police now trying to find the person behind the letters.
Sourav Ganguly, who is also the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president, filed a complaint after two threatening letters reached his office on Monday.
The letters allegedly threatened to kill Ganguly and his wife and also warned of harm to people close to them.
According to the police, similar letters had reportedly been arriving in Ganguly’s name for around six months.
The earlier letters were not taken seriously, but the latest threats led to a formal complaint at Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata.
Police have started checking where the letters came from and who sent them. Initial findings suggest that the latest letters may have been sent through a courier service from Belgharia in North 24 Parganas.
Investigators have contacted the courier agency and are checking the details of the consignments. They have also traced a mobile number allegedly linked to the sender and are looking into its movements.
Police are now trying to establish whether the letters were all sent by the same person and what the reason behind the threats could be.
Ganguly, one of India’s most well known former captains and a former BCCI president, continues to remain involved in cricket administration through his role with CAB.
For now, the main focus of the investigation is to identify the sender and find out whether the latest threats are connected to the letters received over the past six months.
