Young Cricketers Being Trapped? What’s the Truth?

UP district T20 leagues under scrutin

District T20 leagues in Uttar Pradesh were launched to give young cricketers a chance to showcase their talent. But are these tournaments really helping players, or is there something happening behind the scenes?

Leagues in Kanpur, Ayodhya, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Ghaziabad have come under scrutiny over alleged links with illegal betting networks.

While no formal complaint has been filed, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has admitted that it is closely monitoring the situation.

These tournaments are being run like professional franchise leagues, with player auctions, team branding, sponsorships and live streaming.

But questions are being raised over some sponsors and event management companies that are allegedly linked to online betting platforms, which are prohibited in India.

Some cricket officials have claimed that certain event management firms organize multiple district leagues while bringing in sponsors and handling tournament operations.

If these allegations are proven, could the dreams of young cricketers be put at risk?

For many players, these leagues are seen as a pathway to the UP T20 League and, eventually, the IPL. But if the platform itself comes under suspicion, what does that mean for aspiring cricketers?

UPCA secretary Prem Manohar Gupta said the association is aware of concerns surrounding district leagues, including alleged betting activities and irregularities during player trials.

Despite, he added that no formal complaint has been received so far, making it difficult for the association to take action.
