Anurag Kashyap has always been vocal about his thoughts on cinema and the state of the Hindi film industry.

Recently, he spoke about how making “pan-Indian films” is a scam that many producers fall for, and rarely recover from.

He explained that in the pursuit of creating big-budget pan-Indian films, filmmakers often forget the craft of filmmaking and chase numbers instead.

He pointed out that many producers believe Hindi films work across the entire country and are therefore a safer investment for pan-Indian projects. However, that’s far from the truth.

Hindi films generally perform well in the northern belt. In the southern states, except for those starring A-list celebrities, most Hindi films don’t even get released.

Kashyap emphasized that the biggest difference between the South Indian industries and Bollywood is the lack of rooted storytelling in Hindi cinema.

The South Indian film industries focus on grounded, culturally rich narratives. Their films aren’t made to impress the entire country, they are made for people who understand the language and the culture.

Bollywood, on the other hand, tries to please everyone and ends up failing.

Kashyap also noted that in recent times, even the Tamil film industry has started competing with Bollywood by aiming to make pan-Indian films.

This, he warned, compromises the authenticity of their cinema. Songs are increasingly in English, narratives feel forced or pretentious, and originality suffers.

The industry that once served as an inspiration for others is now trying to replicate it.

Instead of chasing 1000-crore box office dreams that attempt to please everyone, the Tamil industry, and others, should return to telling rooted stories with unique voices.

What matters more than numbers is how a story is remembered, how it touches people. They shouldn’t sacrifice their authenticity and creativity to create something mediocre that may not resonate with anyone at all.
