An Air India pilot was detained at Vancouver International Airport on December 23, 2025. Canadian authorities arrested him on suspicion of alcohol consumption before operating a long-haul flight to Delhi via Vienna. The incident took place just before Christmas.
The situation led to a last-minute delay as airline staff and local officials addressed the issue. Airport personnel reportedly raised concerns about the pilot’s condition. A breathalyser test was conducted, which the pilot is said to have failed.
Flight AI186, operated using a Boeing 777, was scheduled to depart from Vancouver to Delhi with a stopover in Vienna. Such ultra long-haul flights require strict coordination. Crew duty limits and safety protocols are closely monitored on these routes.
Reports suggest a duty-free store staff member noticed the pilot drinking wine or detected alcohol while he was purchasing a bottle. Authorities were alerted immediately. After failing the test, the pilot was removed and replaced, causing a delay of nearly two hours.
Air India later expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers. The airline confirmed cooperation with Canadian authorities. It also stated that the pilot has been removed from flying duties pending investigations by the airline and India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
The incident has raised serious concerns among passengers. Pilots hold immense responsibility for safety. Any indication of alcohol use before a flight damages public trust, even when intervention occurs before takeoff.
Aviation regulations mandate strict fitness-for-duty standards. Most airlines follow zero tolerance policies for alcohol before flights. When such incidents surface, passengers are left questioning how consistently these safety rules are enforced.
