Sam Altman, the creator of OpenAI, challenged Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani to prove that Indian businesses can compete with those in Silicon Valley in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
Gurnani accepted the challenge. During his tour to India, Altman was asked if Indian entrepreneurs could create an AI tool similar to ChatGPT. He responded in the negative. Altman voiced doubt but urged Indian businesspeople to try nevertheless.

Altman’s response was tweeted by Gurnani, who also announced that the challenge had been accepted. He emphasized the need to not underestimate Indian businesspeople and how they would want to create their own AI tools.
Later, Altman said that the comment had been misinterpreted and added that it would be challenging to compete with OpenAI on a $10 million budget. However, he recognized the potential of Indian companies and thought they may offer the world something fresh.

Altman spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tour to discuss the significance of international AI legislation. In addition to expressing his desire to support Indian companies, Altman stated his respect for them.
