In China, Elon Musk declared ambitions to grow his firm. However, his meetings with Chinese ministers and praise of China’s “vitality and promise” have alarmed some, including Republican leader and US presidential contender Vivek Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy worried that China was manipulating American business leaders.
Ramaswamy criticized Musk for meeting with China’s foreign minister to oppose US-China decoupling, calling it highly troubling. Ramaswamy claimed that US businesspeople that support Beijing’s goals boost China’s worldwide image. He also said President Biden is influenced by China.
Musk’s visit to China coincides with rising competition from Chinese electric automobiles and uncertainty over Tesla’s Shanghai plant development. However, China has supported Musk’s Shanghai Gigafactory. Shanghai’s automotive manufacturing value was boosted by Tesla last year, and local officials have pledged to work with the firm on autonomous driving and robot modules.
Since China reopened its borders after changing its zero-COVID policy, several US CEOs including Tim Cook from Apple, Jamie Dimon from JP Morgan, and Laxman Narasimhan from Starbucks have visited China.
