US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has announced the arrest of an Indian national, Rinkeshkumar Kaushikbhai Patel, in connection with a theft case in Tennessee.
According to a statement shared by ICE on X, Patel was taken into custody after being convicted of conspiracy to commit larceny in Bradley County, Tennessee. Authorities stated that the case involved theft exceeding $60,000.
Patel, a native of Gujarat, was reportedly sentenced to six years in prison. However, reports suggest that he served less than one year before the remaining sentence was suspended.
ICE agents later took him into custody directly from Bradley County Jail. He could now face deportation proceedings in the United States.
According to earlier reports, the case dates back to July 2025 when Patel was arrested in connection with an alleged fraud targeting a local resident.
At the time, the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office claimed that the victim lost more than $250,000 through Bitcoin transfers and cash collections allegedly connected to a larger scam network.
Investigators reportedly caught Patel while he was attempting to collect additional money from the victim.
However, the latest ICE statement only refers to theft exceeding $60,000. This has led to speculation that the original allegations may have resulted in reduced charges during the legal process.
The reduced sentence and early release have also triggered discussion around how the case was handled by Tennessee authorities.
This is not the first instance where ICE has re-arrested an Indian national after release by local or state authorities in the United States.
More details regarding Patel’s immigration status and possible deportation proceedings are expected in the coming days.
