A state of alarm is underway in Canada as yet another instance of gruesome violence was enacted against an Indian. The head of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Canada’s Edmonton, Boota Singh Gill, was shot dead on Monday in the area of Cavanagh Boulevard SW and Cherniak Way SW.
The police responded to a report of a shootout, whereupon they found three men with gunshot wounds. Two of them had already succumbed to the injuries, while the third was seriously wounded. This has not been the first incident; in fact, it’s just the latest entry in a series of events involving extortion calls and targeted violence. The Canadian government has shown serious concern; however, any significant step in this matter is yet to be taken.
It is a serious problem that a country like Canada, which boasts a huge Indian population, is always highlighted in crimes against the said Indians. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed how a temple was earlier attacked by a certain individual who was laid off on the account of having an unsound mind. Which still raises questions about the safety of Indians in Canada.
India and Canada had their share of rocky relations, and this ongoing series of targeted violence is in no way helping. The passive behavior of the Canadian police is yet another reason to raise concern. They just told the citizens to avoid the area and are in denial of accepting this as an immediate concern for public safety.
