On 30th of October, Trafalgar Square in the heart of London came alive with vibrant colors and joyous celebrations as the city embraced the spirit of Diwali, the festival of lights. The annual Diwali On Trafalgar Square (DOTS) event, organized by the Diwali in London (DiL) committee in partnership with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, brought together diverse communities in a spectacular showcase of Indian culture.
The festivities, held from 1 pm to 7 pm (local time), showcased the rich tapestry of Indian traditions, featuring 200 brilliantly dressed dancers who mesmerized the audience with their performances. The event was a testament to the unity among the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities, who came together to celebrate their shared heritage. Attendees were treated to a cultural extravaganza that included traditional dances, music, and activities representing various parts of India.
The Diwali celebration was not just about performances; it was an immersive experience for attendees. Sessions on how to tie and wear a sari or turban added a touch of authenticity, while the “light-up moment” at dusk created a magical atmosphere, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness.
Londoners, irrespective of their backgrounds, embraced the festivities wholeheartedly. James, a local teacher, described his first Diwali experience as “absolutely incredible.” He praised the event for its inclusivity, emphasizing how the reenactments of the story of Ram and Sita conveyed valuable lessons to people from all backgrounds.
The event also drew praise from first-time attendees who were experiencing Diwali outside of India. One young attendee expressed her joy, stating that the celebration made her feel at home away from home. Another attendee, an Indian-origin boy, appreciated the enthusiasm of non-Indian Londoners, highlighting the event’s universal appeal.
The Diwali celebrations were not limited to performances; attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including yoga workshops, puppet shows, and comedy performances. The event also featured cookery theatres, henna stalls, and market stalls offering a delightful mix of vegan and vegetarian treats. The aroma of Indian food wafted through the air, enticing attendees to savor the diverse flavors of Indian cuisine.
Diwali On Trafalgar Square was not just a celebration; it was a testament to the multicultural harmony and shared joy. As the event concluded, the anticipation for Diwali, which falls on Sunday, November 12, continued to grow, promising more moments of togetherness and cultural celebration for the city’s residents and visitors alike.
