John Abraham’s long-delayed film Tehran is finally making its way to an OTT platform. While the release date is still under wraps, the trailer will drop on August 1, 2025, and the movie will stream exclusively on Zee5. This digital release ends the wait for fans who have been anticipating its launch for quite some time.
The recently unveiled poster showcases John Abraham in an intense, injured avatar, with only half his face visible. The tagline reads, “Hunted by Iran, Abandoned by Israel, Deserted by India,” hinting at a politically charged plot. The film is directed by Arun Gopalan and carries a gripping visual tone.
Despite its potential, Tehran hasn’t received significant promotional push, which often doesn’t impact OTT releases as much as theatrical ones. Since viewership is key on streaming platforms, its performance will rely on audience interest and buzz. Neither the producers nor Zee5 have revealed how much the film was acquired for.
While the OTT release gives the film visibility, fans are disheartened that John Abraham won’t get to showcase his talent on the big screen. They believe Tehran might have been a better theatrical release than his previous film Vedaa, which failed to leave an impression.
John’s earlier release The Diplomat received praise from viewers for presenting him in a subtler, less action-heavy role. Although Vedaa didn’t perform well, The Diplomat highlighted a different facet of John’s acting, winning over a niche audience.
Following the pandemic, John Abraham hasn’t had a solo hit to his name. Pathaan performed well primarily due to its franchise strength and scale, but it wasn’t a solo vehicle. Fans believe the time is ripe for a strong comeback through a well-scripted solo film.
For future success, producers need to offer John roles with unique stories and standout scripts. Moreover, trailers and promotions must be strong enough to drive ticket bookings. The audience response starts with a compelling first look.
Until then, fans can only hope that Tehran changes the tide for John Abraham. Whether the OTT response makes a difference to his box office graph remains to be seen.
