K-Drama Sparks OTT Outrage: Indian Culture Insulted

K-drama sparks outrage in India

Korean dramas enjoy a strong following in India, with young viewers embracing K-dramas, web series and movies on OTT platforms. Many fans admire Korean culture and creativity. However, disappointment rises when Indian traditions are portrayed carelessly or mocked in these shows.

In a recent K-drama, Indian culture was wrongly mixed with Arab culture, turning sacred symbols into jokes. This careless portrayal reflects a lack of understanding and respect for a neighbouring Asian culture, leaving Indian audiences upset and offended.

The show To The Moon became controversial for using cultural elements like the bindi for humour. While it initially appeared progressive, its depiction of India as exotic and stereotypical undermined its intent and drew strong criticism from Indian fans.

Confusion between Arabic turbans and Indian attire further worsened the issue. Viewers expressed anger on social media, saying that if creators cannot portray India accurately, they should avoid reducing its heritage for entertainment.

Popular Korean stars such as Lee Sun Bin, Ra Mi Ran, Jo A Ram and Kim Young Dae feature in the drama. These actors are admired in India, but fans now feel let down by their association with a show seen as insulting.
