In a groundbreaking move, Netflix has unveiled its extensive gaming slate for 2024, featuring a highly anticipated video game set in the gripping world of “Squid Game.” Scheduled for release, the game promises an immersive experience where players can compete in challenges inspired by the hit series.
Alongside this revelation, Netflix introduced other noteworthy titles like “Sonic Mania Plus” and a sequel to the life simulation game “Cozy Grove,” titled “Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit,” are among the offerings from Netflix’s internal studio Spry Fox. The problem however is the lack of marketing and interest amongst the gaming community towards these titles.
In an era of AAA titles, it is getting increasingly difficult to sell games which lack an edge and the sequels Netflix is relying on are of games which have not only been long forgotten but are expected to not stand out in the tough to survive industry.
In such times, Squid Game’s video game, with the show being a global phenomenon right now and recently seeing positive response as Squid Game : The Challenge proves to be the only hope for the multimedia giant.
One of the standout announcements is the development of a game tied to Zack Snyder’s Netflix movies, “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire” and “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver.” The game, developed by Super Evil Megacorp, will continue the narrative beyond the cinematic experience, however the movie, much unlike Squid Games failed to do well and has a much smaller audience and fanbase, making this videogame another full prospect.
Netflix’s gaming division, which made waves with its November reveal of upcoming titles, aims to deliver an extensive library of games to its subscribers.
According to Mike Verdu, Netflix’s vice president of games, the platform is on track to offer a staggering 86 games by the end of the year, all included with Netflix memberships and free of ads, in-app purchases, or extra fees.
Among the upcoming releases are classic titles from the Grand Theft Auto series, licensed from Rockstar Games. “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition” will be accessible to Netflix customers on mobile platforms, comprising “Grand Theft Auto III,” “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,” and “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.”
These games, however iconic, are tales of the past and The Trilogy : Definitive Edition certainly had one of the worst responses for any of the GTA games. As things continue to look bleak for Netflix, it is tough to see any title other than Squid Game doing wonders for them.
With nearly 90 more games in development, Netflix’s foray into gaming showcases its commitment to providing diverse and engaging content for subscribers, solidifying its position as a multifaceted entertainment hub. However, Netflix still has a lot of ground to cover before realising this dream and they must start with adding better and newer titles.
