When Rana Naidu first dropped in 2023, it shocked Indian audiences. Venkatesh Daggubati—known for his clean, family-friendly image—was seen abusing and acting wild.
Rana Daggubati, too, broke barriers with bold, unapologetic scenes and sex scenes. That sheer shock factor made Season 1 a viral hit on Netflix. Despite early backlash, curiosity turned into popularity, and it was quickly renewed.

But Season 2 fizzled out.
The key issue? The very elements that made the first season bold and controversial—abuse, raw family trauma, unfiltered chaos—were significantly toned down.

While that may have been an attempt to avoid criticism, it backfired creatively. The show lost its edge. The narrative shifted toward conventional storytelling and emotional redemption arcs, softening the intensity and unpredictability that had initially hooked viewers.
Venkatesh’s character Naga, who was once wild, vulgar, and unpredictable, was watered down into near comic relief. Rana’s brooding fixer persona also became repetitive, with less grit and more moral conflict.

The emotional stakes felt familiar but less gripping. Even as strong performances from Arjun Rampal and Abhishek Banerjee stood out, the overall impact dulled.
The creators admitted they self-censored—partly from past backlash, partly from personal judgment. But in doing so, Rana Naidu lost its unique voice. Instead of doubling down on its edgy storytelling, it tried to play it safe, which killed all the hype.
The result? Disappointed fans, flat buzz, and a sequel that failed to live up to its disruptive first chapter. In trying to appease everyone, Season 2 ended up pleasing no one.
We have to see if the series will be renewed for a Season 3, or if this is the end of the Rana Naidu show after the disastrous response to its Season 2 on Netflix.
