Aamir Khan has stirred controversy by announcing that his new film Sitaare Zameen Par will not debut on any OTT platform. Instead, the film will be released on YouTube in a pay-per-view model starting August 1, priced at ₹100 per user. The actor made this decision public during a press event, where he offered strong criticism of major streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and JioHotstar, accusing them of harming the traditional cinema ecosystem.
Known for his bold choices, Aamir Khan explained that he finds it more rewarding to earn directly from his audience rather than making massive deals with OTT platforms. He declared that he would not be happy selling the film for ₹150 crores to any streaming service and would rather receive ₹100 from every fan who values his work. His comments were seen by many as a direct insult to the OTT industry, which has become a dominant force in film distribution.
While Aamir‘s approach was praised by some for its independence, critics were quick to point out the risks. Many believe that releasing Sitaare Zameen Par on YouTube will make it vulnerable to piracy, which could negatively impact its overall revenue. The actor’s decision has also reignited debate about whether traditional releases can still thrive in an age dominated by streaming.
Additionally, his public statement promising that SZP would never be released on any OTT platform is now being questioned. Fans and critics alike are unsure whether Aamir Khan will stick to that claim, especially as the film’s digital life progresses over time. The industry waits to see if his boycott of streaming giants is temporary or a long-term shift.
