You expect film reviews to stir debate. You do not expect personal abuse. Yet that is what followed Anupama Chopra’s review of Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh. Her honest take triggered a sharp backlash across social media platforms.
The backlash began soon after she uploaded her YouTube review for the Hollywood Reporter. In the video titled “gore and grit,” she called out the film’s heavy use of violence and what she described as an incomplete screenplay driven by raw aggression.
You also hear her call the film “exhausting” before she switches tone and acknowledges its strengths. She praises Akshaye Khanna’s performance and the film’s cinematography. The review was critical, not dismissive. Many viewers either ignored that balance or chose to attack.
Anger peaked when she criticised Aditya Dhar and his four action directors for glorifying graphic violence. She also flagged excessive testosterone, hyper nationalism, and anti-Pakistan sentiment as issues. That part of the review triggered the most outrage.
You then see the comments spiral. Viewers posted insults like “Go weave, grandma” and “What’s wrong with too much testosterone,” while others labelled her out of touch. The focus shifted from the review to personal abuse.
One comment even linked her criticism to a statement by Yami Gautam, Aditya Dhar’s wife, who once accused critics of running an “extortion-like racket” for positive publicity. That claim added fuel to the online firestorm.
Until now, Anupama has not issued a formal response. You only see speculation grow about who started the attack cycle and why. What remains clear is this. A film review turned into a digital mob trial overnight.
