Cult Classic Sequel & Flop Director: Fans Divided

Emraan Hashmi in Awarapan 2

Emraan Hashmi’s comeback as the brooding hero in Awarapan 2 is creating buzz, but nostalgia is not the only factor. Nearly two decades after the first film underperformed, Vishesh Films hopes fan support and a familiar Bollywood formula will revive the franchise.

Directed by Nitin Kakkar and written by Bilal Siddiqui, filming began in Bangkok. Production details were revealed on Hashmi’s birthday, a clear marketing move aimed at stirring fan sentiment. The sequel aims to revive heartbreak, action, and high-voltage music that made the original a cult classic.

For fans, the so-called “Emraanians,” Awarapan 2 seeks to revive the tragic hero’s aura and the haunting songs that sustained the legacy. Emraan Hashmi has also gained a fresh fan base among Gen Z, boosting the film’s potential reach.

Although the first film flopped at the box office, it became a cult favourite over time. Recent hits like Sanam Teri Kasam and Saiyaara show audiences still appreciate passionate, melodramatic romances with memorable soundtracks.

The choice of director, however, has raised questions. Nitin Kakkar, known for Filmistaan, Mitron, Notebook, Jawaani Jaaneman, and Ram Singh Charlie, has not delivered a major box-office hit. Fans are wondering why Mohit Suri, who directed the original Awarapan and Saiyaara, isn’t returning.

Social media jokes about a “director mess-up” indicate mixed expectations. For now, hopes remain cautiously optimistic. Awarapan 2 releases on April 3, 2026, promising pain, passion, and romance for a new generation.
