BO Reality: Diwali Heavy Losses, Now Xmas in Danger

Bollywood box office clashes Ikkis Thamma War 2 Coolie

There was a time when two films releasing together helped both do well. That era is long gone. Today, when two big movies clash, one suffers major losses, and often both fail right from the first day. The pattern has become more visible this year, with several titles competing for the same release dates and struggling to stay afloat.

The next big clash is already on the calendar. Ikkis and Tu Meri Main Tera are scheduled to release on Christmas, and their box office fate remains uncertain. The last clash during Diwali between Ek Dewaane Ki Deewaniyat and Thamma ended poorly. While Ek Dewaane Ki Deewaniyat managed to survive because of its smaller budget, Thamma failed to attract strong footfalls even on opening day.

The same story repeated earlier this year with War 2 and Coolie during the Independence Day weekend, followed by Kantara: Chapter 1 competing with Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari on Gandhi Jayanti. These constant clashes are proving costly for producers and distributors.

The problem is not just the box office competition but also the fight for screens. Producers are battling for full shows, leaving no room for fair sharing. The rising production costs add to the crisis. Stars demand massive fees, and producers agree to unrealistic budgets that are impossible to recover. Trade experts have repeatedly advised profit-sharing models, but most stars have refused.

It has now reached a stage where a film with a debut actor in the lead costs over Rs. 50 crore. Solo releases, even on non-festival Fridays, have performed better than clashing festival releases. Many believe these clashes happen because producers are unsure about the film’s quality and try to use festival hype to cover up weak content.

Bollywood is clearly in trouble. With only two major hits this year, the industry cannot afford any more high-risk clashes. For now, avoiding direct competition seems to be the only way forward until the box office stabilizes again.
